🤕 Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker
Don and Mimi Galvin had the first of their 12 children in 1945. Intelligence and good looks ran in the family, but so, it turns out, did mental illness: By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin sons had developed schizophrenia. “For a family, schizophrenia is, primarily, a felt experience, as if the foundation of the family is permanently tilted,” Kolker writes. He unspools the stories of the Galvin siblings with enormous compassion while tracing the scientific advances in treating the illness.

📖 A Promised Land by Barack Obama
Presidential memoirs are meant to inform, to burnish reputations and, to a certain extent, to shape the course of history, and Obama’s is no exception. What sets it apart from his predecessors’ books is the remarkable degree of introspection. He invites the reader inside his head as he ponders life-or-death issues of national security, examining every detail of his decision-making. “A Promised Land” is the first of two volumes — it ends in 2011 — and it is as contemplative and measured as the former president himself.

🌳 Shakespeare in a Divided America by James Shapiro
In his latest book, James Shapiro has outdone himself. He takes two huge cultural hyper-objects — Shakespeare and America — and dissects the effects of their collision. Each chapter centers on a year with a different thematic focus. The last chapter, “2017: Left | Right,” where Shapiro truly soars, analyzes the notorious Central Park production of “Julius Caesar.” By this point it is clear that the real subject of the book is not Shakespeare plays, but us, the U.S.

American Innovation Center美國創新中心歡迎南投來的朋友！創新對你的生活來說代表什麼意義？創新跟教育又有什麼關係呢？這是周三留學美國教育顧問對南投草屯商工150名同學問的問題。這些同學在12月9日來到台北，特別來參訪設在松山文創園區裡的美國創新中心。在這次參訪中，他們學習到美國留學最新的趨勢，包括未來如果他們想留學美國，可能會有興趣的商業和管理課程有哪些主修可以選擇。像這樣的學習之旅是EducationUSA Taiwan可以提供的服務之一，我們歡迎台灣各級學校跟我們聯繫，為學生提供最新的教育資訊。美國創新中心位於園區的二樓，歡迎免費參觀。#STEM #留學美國
#AIC welcomed friends from Nantou on Wednesday! What does innovation mean to you in your daily life? And how does education impact that? Theae are questions the #EducationUSA adviser asked 150 students from Nantou National Caotun Commercial & Industrial Vocational Senior High School when they visited #AmericanInnovationCenter on their trip to Taipei Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. In their two-hour visit, they learned about U.S. study trends and especially about the potential Business and Management majors they hope to pursue in the U.S.A. A learning tour like this is one of the many EducationUSA services in Taiwan. AIT welcomes all school sections to contact them for briefing or counselling services for their students. All my life, I thought the grass was greener elsewhere.
I was born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, but spent the past four years in the United States. I loved it, and wanted so badly to stay — but alas, the U.S. government had different plans.
Upon returning to KL, I had difficulty re-integrating myself into our way of life. What had previously been second nature became a whole different creature. I missed the people, the infrastructure, the abundance of American living.
But then I took another look, and I realized my home had so many other things going for it. I bought a drone, picked up videography, and tried to show you what I see.
After 21 days of traveling, filming and editing, I present to you – Kuala Lumpur from above.
Playing tourist in my own city helped me see it through new eyes. We have so much untapped potential: The natural resources. The gorgeous skyscrapers. The rich heritage that is reflected in every building we see.
The grass isn’t greener elsewhere; we just need to see it from a different perspective.
I hope this video gives you just that.
Special thanks to Mark Lee for driving me all around KL, and Gwen Yi for helping me express this through words.
